I got to interview David S. Goyer for his upcoming Starz series “Da Vinci’s Demons” today at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour. We’ll have the full interview on our TV channel when the show premieres in April, but of course we had to ask about some of the comic book movies with which Goyer has been involved.
Goyer’s adaptation of Blade is credited by many as legitimizing the comic book movies. He agrees that a reboot now is inevitable. “I do,” Goyer said. “I do. Now that Marvel/Disney have recaptured the rights, I’m sure it will be [remade]. They made too much money on that character to not reboot him at some point.”
Blade doesn’t really seem like a Disney franchise though, but that shouldn’t stop them. “But I mean, look, between merchandise and what not, that little character generated almost a billion dollars,” Goyer countered.
Unfortunately, any remaining hope for a Blade IV with Wesley Snipes, when he becomes available again, should now be crushed. “I don’t think so. I think there’s too much water under the bridge there.”
Of course, the big question we really wanted to ask couldn’t be answered, though you can take the fact that he couldn’t answer it as an interesting evasion: was there ever any talk from the studio that John Blake, the character Joseph Gordon-Levitt played in the Goyer co-written Dark Knight Rises, might appear in the Justice League movie?
“I can absolutely not answer that question,” Goyer said, adding, “Sorry.”
Before X-Men: First Class, Goyer was writing a Magneto movie. We also had to wonder if his script got folded into the first section of First Class, where Erik Lehnsherr was hunting Nazis. Goyer confirmed this.
“It did. It did. It was sort of that but expanded. I was a little bummed. They definitely took some elements from our script,” he said with a laugh showing he wasn’t really that upset about it.
