If you were watching the Super Bowl today and decided not to fast forward through the commercials – and be honest, it’s probably the one day out of the year when audiences aren’t inclined to do that – you probably saw the new 1 1/2 minute trailer for Disney’s The Lone Ranger, starring Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp. But if you missed it, and want to see what Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski is up to these days, it’s online now. Hammer plays a wild west vigilante who teams up with a Native American bird-hat enthusiast played by Johnny Depp to take down an evil railroad baron played by Tom Wilkinson. Ruth Wilson (“Luther”), Helena Bonham Carter (Les Miserables) and Barry Pepper (Broken City) co-star in the new big budget western spectacular.
It looks fun and all, but will audiences flock to a western of any stripe? At least, will they flock enough to make back the film’s enormous budget? We’ll find out when The Lone Ranger opens on July 3, 2013.
