There is an ever-growing pool of portable Bluetooth speakers, and it’s getting to the point at which you can’t tell one from another. So, manufacturers are looking for angles and details to distinguish their units from the pack. I don’t know if units come in packs, but that’ll have to do.
The Urchin BOOM takes the tact of indestructibility. Covered in a silicone skin, it’s impact and water resistant (though not waterproofed, so don’t get stupid). It comes with suction cups and clips for you to hang it from or stick it to whatever’s around you. Urchin promises it can accompany you throughout the day – from the shower, to the mountain bike, to the mountain top – if that’s your average day.
For $149, the BOOM offers battery life, Bluetooth range and sound quality on par with similar priced models. It’s all up to you to decide how rough you are on your toys and if you need something as ding-resistant as the BOOM.
