CraveOnline: I was bummed that there was no Yukio…
James Mangold: In the airport.
In the airport. And I don’t think she’s going to be in Days of Future Past. Do you have Yukio plans?
I won’t discuss the future. But I will tell you that I did propose a version [of the closing credits scene] that had her in it. I think that the second you start doing stuff… Once I left the confines of my movie, the second you start doing stuff that interlocks with other pictures, you’re now in a very complicated region where there’s a lot of cooks. Let’s just say there’s a lot of people and a lot of anxiety about not boxing any other movie in, and I think that that’s where you get with that. That’s why we did “Two Years Later.” So we could kind of figure Yukio had kind of moved [on].
If you continue in this milieu, are you going to be comfortable with the collaborative process with other films? Or are you going to try to keep your films separate?
Well, like I said, the movie between the fade in and the fade out is 100% me. Once you start handing off to other pictures… I’m totally comfortable making another standalone Wolverine movie. The trick is when you’re trying to interface with the world.
That’s what I’m saying. Would you want to interface more?
Well, you have to. You have to. Even though I had nothing to do with [X-Men] 1, 2 and 3, clearly coming on and making this movie I was inheriting decisions and ideas, including the casting of Hugh Jackman and certain design elements and all sorts of things that have existed before.
I know you said that you didn’t want to talk too much about the future… And this is a genuine question…
As opposed to a false question?
I have so many false questions. You have no idea.
Okay, have I dodged a few of them?
No, you’re good.
Okay.
Will we ever see a Knight & Day 2, because I fucking love that movie.
No, you will never see a Knight & Day 2.
Damn it! Damn it! Day & Knight writes itself!
Yes, I’m sorry.
I do love that movie though.
Well, you should get the extended cut then. [Laughs]
