The last time that The Penguin was portrayed in live action was in the 1992 film, Batman Returns with Danny Devito in the role. Prior to that, Burgess Meredith had the iconic take on The Penguin from the ‘60s “Batman” TV series.
The Penguin wasn’t used during Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, but the upcoming Batman prequel, “Gotham” will use The Penguin in his younger days when he was only known as Oswald Cobblepot.
Fox has released the first image of Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot in “Gotham.” In the show, Cobblepot is said to be “a low-level psychopath who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.” Cobblepot also works for Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), a notorious figure in Gotham’s underworld.
As conceived by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in 1941, The Penguin is one of the few Batman villains who isn’t insane. Instead, The Penguin is often presented as “the gentleman of crime,” with a great love of top hats, umbrellas and birds of all feathers.
Prior to “Gotham,” Taylor appeared in “Person of Interest,” “The Walking Dead,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “The Good Wife” and “Life on Mars.”
This photo continues Fox’s slow rollout of the characters from “Gotham.” So far, we’ve see Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
“Gotham” has already been given a series order by Fox and it will likely debut next fall
