In yet another attempt to play to their most hardcore fanbase without actually producing hardcore space-based sci-fi shows, SyFy is preparing a trio of comic book properties for air, including Frank Miller’s classic miniseries Ronin.
As originally reported by The Hollywood Reporter and re-reported by Crave film site ComingSoon, the network is looking for a writer for the TV event series project, which would bring one of Miller’s earliest comic classics to the small screen.
Published by DC in 1983-1984, Ronin follows a 13th century samurai who traps his soul and that of the demon who killed his master inside a legendary sword, only to see both re-awakened in 21st century New York and their epic struggle renewed.
While “Ronin” will be an as-yet-undetermined length television miniseries, SyFy is also producing possible series productions around the Oni Press comics Letter 44 as well as Image Comics’ Clone.
Letter 44, based on the Charles Soule/Alberto Alburquerque series that launched last year, followed newly-elected U.S. President Stephen Blades, who discovers a letter from his predecessor documenting an alien construction project found in the asteroid belt seven years earlier. A team of astronauts were sent to check out the find and are now close to completing their mission.
Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3) is set to write and direct the “Letter 44” pilot as well as executive produce the series, along with Eric Gitter (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Rene Echevarria (“Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “The 4400,” “Terra Nova”).
Clone follows the adventures of Dr. Luke Taylor, whose perfect life comes to a dramatic halt when an identical, bloodied version of himself arrives at his doorstep with news that he is one of many clones… and they’re all after his pregnant wife and their unborn child.
“Clone” will be co-executive produced by Image mainstay and “The Walking Dead” co-creator Robert Kirkman.
