MLB 14 The Show Is Available on PS4 Today, Sports 1 Million-Polygon Environments

Instant replay may be making real baseball games longer than ever, but that doesn’t mean this year’s edition of The Show will be any less enjoyable. Despite releasing on PS3 and Vita about a month ago, Sony took some extra time to spruce up MLB 14 The Show for PS4, and today you can finally check out what they’ve added. I’m not one to buy the same game twice, but if you held off specifically for the PS4 enhancements, then it sounds like you’re going to be quite pleased.

In a post to the PlayStation Blog, The Show director of production Chris Cutliff detailed what players can expect on PS4 that never made it into the other versions, as well as why the next-gen edition is more than a “simple port.”

We weren’t content to simply port over this year’s game to PS4; our talented team has invested a great deal of work into this next-gen debut. This includes completely rebuilding all 30 MLB stadiums from scratch; textures are four times as large and environment polygon counts have jumped from 150,000 to more than 1 million. We’ve made advancements in countless areas: players are more detailed, down to the hairs on their face; fully rendered grass adds vibrancy to our grand cathedrals; a revamped lighting engine simply stuns, especially during night games; fully redone HD crowd audio leverages the vast resources of PS4; and much, much more.

Man, someone get this guy a gig writing fantasy novels! Such descriptive language does George R.R. Martin proud. Seriously though, the PS4 version seems improved on almost all fronts, and considering the fact that you can continue where you left off in next year’s edition for the first time, you may as well jump to the series’ platform of choice as soon as possible.

Save data can be moved between the PS3, Vita, and PS4 versions of the game at will, so there shouldn’t be a problem if you play on multiple platforms. My only real complaint is Sony’s goofy “anthem” video, released at the end of last month. “Baseball is better than football, yeah!” Whatever keeps baseball fans feeling good about themselves, I guess.
