Luis Suarez has been charged by FIFA for biting defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s match with Italy in the World Cup 2014 group stages.
Referee Marco Rodriguez didn’t see Suarez bite into Chiellini’s shoulder, meaning that the striker wasn’t punished during the match. However, after FIFA has reviewed the incident it will likely lead to a suspension for Suarez, meaning he could miss out on the rest of Uruguay’s World Cup campaign depending upon how far the squad progresses in the tournament.
Uruguay defeated Italy 1-0 in their match yesterday (June 24th) in order to advance to the World Cup knockout rounds. Speaking after the match, Suarez commented on the incident but didn’t acknowledge that he was to blame, saying: “These are things that happen on the pitch, we were both in the area, he thrust his shoulder into me. These things happen on the pitch, and we don’t have to give them so much (importance).”
After biting Chiellini, Suarez fell to the ground alongside the defender, protesting that he had been hit in the face by the Italian. After reviewing the video footage of the incident, FIFA will undoubtedly see that this wasn’t the case, and Suarez should rightfully receive at least two match bans for his troubles.
