Rory McIlroy won the British Open Sunday. Plain and simple, it was a big day for the 25-year-old AND his entire family.
First, McIlroy joined Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only golfers since the 30s to win their third major by the age of 25. Yup, that’s impressive. What’s even more impressive was McIlroy’s dad’s confidence in his son a decade ago.
Gerry McIlroy made a bet with the British betting firm Ladbrokes in 2004 that his son would win (at 500/1 odds, and we’re assuming the British Open only) within 10 years. According to reports, that bet will now payout $171,000.
There were two other bets that could payout a total of more than $300,000
It’s good to be Rory McIlroy right now. It’s almost just as good to be Gerry.
