Australia continued its dominance of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games overnight, led by the history making Campbell sisters, Cate and Bronte, who became the first sisters to take gold and silver in the same Commonwealth Games race.
Cate Campbell won gold in the 100 metre freestyle final, edging out her sister Bronte in world record time whilst Emma McKeon came in third to complete an all-Australian podium.
The 22-year-old Cate smashed the Commonwealth Games record, actually set by Bronte earlier in the meet, in a time of 52.68sec. Bronte also set a personal best in the 100m freestyle, finishing just 0.18sec behind.
Furthering their clean sweep of swimming medals at the Commonwealth Games, Australia secured their third all-Australian podium in the men’s 200m backstroke final. Mitch Larkin claimed his first gold of the Games ahead of Josh Beaver and Matson Lawson.
Two other Australians, Laetisha Scanlan and Warren Potent, both claimed gold for the Commonwealth Games’ satellite shooting final while Daniel Repacholi added a bronze in the men’s 50m pistol final to the gold he already pocketed earlier in the Games.
This brings Australia’s leading gold medal tally up to 30 from a total of 87 medals. Australia is in fact leading across all medals with 25 silver and 32 bronze. England is running a close second with 27 gold of a total 74 medals. Host country Scotland have set a new national record for Commonwealth Games gold medals, with wins from the men’s pairs lawn bowls finals and women’s parasport T11/12 100 metres sprint, bringing the tally to 13 gold of a total 33 medals.
Meanwhile, the Hockeyroos are just one game away from the Commonwealth Games gold medal match after beating England 3-0 at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre on Monday and world champion Kookaburras secured an impressive 6-0 win over South Africa.
Australia’s female gymnasts will go into day two of the the artistic teams event in Glasgow in second place behind England and the swimming competition will conclude on day six with the men’s 50m and 1500m freestyle, and the men’s and women’s medley relays among the final events to be contested.
