David Chase Denies Clarifying Tony’s Fate In ‘The Sopranos’

The deliberately ambiguous ending of “The Sopranos” left many viewers wondering whether Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) survived or whether he was whacked in the closing seconds by an offscreen assassin.

Earlier today on Vox, Martha P. Nochimson published an interview with “The Sopranos” creator David Chase that seemed to indicate that Tony lived through the end of the series. When Nochimson asked Chase if Tony was dead, he reportedly shook his head ‘no’ and said “No, he isn’t.”

Naturally, this story caught fire on the internet. However, Chase’s representatives have released a statement that implies Nochimson misunderstood his response.

“A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying, ‘Tony Soprano is not dead,’ is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true.

As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, ‘Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.’ To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of THE SOPRANOS raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer.”

So if you’re looking for a definitive answer about Tony’s fate, you’ve come to the wrong place!
