North Melbourne youngster Trent Dumont has been charged over the alleged robbery and assault of a taxi driver in South Australia.
The incident was said to have happened early Sunday morning after the 19-year-old Dumont and another man were picked up by a taxi in Adelaide’s North Terrace.
Dumont, yet to debut for the Kangaroos after being selected with the 30th pick in the 2013 National Draft, was allegedly involved in threatening the driver and stealing money.
A police statement described the incident:
“…At about 4.16am, the male driver picked up the two men pictured from North Terrace, Adelaide, and drove them to Spring Cres in Banksia Park.
“The two men then allegedly threatened the driver and demanded all of his money. When he refused, one of the men stole a job book from the taxi and exited the vehicle.
“When the driver got out of the taxi to get his book back, the men assaulted him and stole money from the taxi before running away.
“The victim was not injured.’’
North Melbourne addressed the news in a brief statement on Tuesday evening.
“The North Melbourne Football Club can confirm that a member of its playing list is currently assisting South Australian Police in relation to an incident that is alleged to have occurred in South Australia earlier this month,” the club said.
“As this is a matter of ongoing police enquiry, no further comment will be made by the Club until it is in a position to do so.”
Dumont trained with the Kangaroos last season and played for the club’s VFL affiliate. The Kangaroos’ official website recently tipped the 187cm midfielder to make his AFL debut early next season.
“With a full pre-season ahead of him, a strong summer on the track should have Dumont right in the running for a senior debut early in 2015,” a club report stated last week.
