Canadians are encouraged to participate in this year’s Remembrance Day by watching the live webcast of the events at the Canadian War Museum’s Memorial Hall on November 11th – it’s the fourth consecutive year that they’re doing this.
On November 11, 1918, at 11am, the First World War came to an end – it lasted over four years, killed or injured nearly 30 million military personnel and devastated some of the world’s biggest empires. Canada mourned the injury or loss of 250,000 soldiers in that war alone. So, on November 11th at exactly 11am, sunlight will shine through a single window in the War Museum’s Memorial Hall to illuminate the headstone of Canada’s Unknown Soldier. Canadians from coast to coast can tune in and watch all of the Remembrance Day events.
It’s been a challenging few weeks for service people on home soil – Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, 53, was killed after being struck in a hit-and-run attack in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, 24, was shot and killed while on honorary guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, the exact location where national remembrance ceremonies are held each year.
