The extent to which Microsoft has successfully turned around the Xbox One’s fortunes has for months remained a mystery, with little but the positive critical reception and presumed retail success of titles like Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2 to guide guesses and speculation. Today, Microsoft revealed via a post to Xbox Wire that not only has the console seen a surge, but that it holds strong momentum heading into the holiday season.
The info comes directly from Yusuf Mehdi, the Corporate VP of Marketing, Strategy, and Business for Xbox. Thanks to the likes of Call of Duty, Sunset Overdrive, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and more, Xbox One has reached the “10 million consoles shipped” milestone. You can check out Mehdi’s remarks below, or read them if full here.
The response to this wave of blockbuster game releases and new bundles has been amazing, and sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect on Nov. 2. Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled, which is exciting as more and more friends will be playing together this holiday. As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks. Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles.
Almost one year ago, I had the honor of shaking hands with hundreds of fans at our Xbox One launch in New York City. We have listened to your feedback and have worked hard to deliver hundreds of improvements to Xbox One, celebrated the launch of amazing new games, and sought ways to offer more value for you. As we reach this milestone, I remain awestruck by your passion for games and your support of Xbox One. Thank you for an incredible year.

Though the post reads a bit more like a victory speech than it probably should, it’s tough to deny the impressiveness of Xbox One’s turnaround. It’s a turnaround that isn’t yet complete, mind you, but the momentum Microsoft has managed to secure in the past month (during which it sold approximately 4 million consoles to retailers) has been absolutely crucial to the platform’s future.
Perhaps more interestingly is that for the first time in a long while, all three gaming hardware manufacturers seem poised to have a successful holiday season. Are there actually enough gamers out there to make this happen? It remains to be seen, but we now officially know that Phil Spencer and the gang are feeling cool and confident about the foreseeable future.
