Last spring, Fox greenlit “Gracepoint,” an adaptation of the acclaimed British series “Broadchurch” that has failed to attract viewers or critics this fall. And apparently Fox has yet to learn its lesson from that one.
According to Deadline, Fox has given a put pilot commitment with “a seven figure penalty” to “Luther,” a new adaptation of the BBC series of the same name. “Luther” creator Neil Cross is writing and executive producing the new take on “Luther.” Original “Luther” star Idris Elba is also on board as an executive producer, but he is not expected to reprise his role as John Luther.
In the three seasons of “Luther” on BBC, John Luther was an exceptionally gifted homicide detective who was also mentally unstable and self-destructive at times. Luther also had a complex relationship with a psychopath named Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), a dangerous woman who was Luther’s nemesis and his love interest.
While the original series ran for only 14 episodes, Elba has previously stated his desire to do a Luther film. If the remake goes to series on Fox, a Luther movie seems much less likely to happen.
“Luther” will likely be in contention for a slot on Fox’s Fall 2015 TV schedule.
