Long-time New York Knicks star Anthony Mason died Saturday morning at the age of 48 after suffering a massive heart attack February 11 he never fully recovered from.
Mason had a very successful 13-year career in the NBA after being drafted in the third round by Portland in 1989. He spent 1991-96 with the Knicks where he played with Hall-of-Famer Patrick Ewing on the team that made it to the 1994 NBA Finals.
“My heart is heavy after learning we lost Anthony Mason last night,” Ewing said. “We were teammates on the Knicks for five great seasons.
“Mase came to play every night and was always ready to go to battle with me every time we stepped on the court together. I will remember him for his strength, determination and perseverance. My thoughts are with is family. May he rest in peace.”
Mason won sixth man of the year in 1995 and was an All-Star with the Heat in 2001. He averaged 10.9 points and nearly 9 rebounds per game over his career.
