For most of his adult life, George A. Romero has been telling zombie stories in feature films including Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, and more. Now, Romero is bringing his brand of the undead to TV.
Variety is reporting that Romero’s Empire of the Dead comic book series is being developed as a TV drama. Empire of the Dead shares the world of Romero’s previous zombie stories, but it also adds vampires to the mix. Marvel Comics began publishing the 15 part Empire of the Dead comic in 2014, with the final issue slated to be released this August.
The description of the first Empire of the Dead comic stated “Welcome to New York City years after the undead plague has erupted — but just because Manhattan has been quarantined, don’t think that everyone inside is safe! Not only do flesh-eaters roam within Manhattan, but there’s another ancient predator about to take a bite out of the Big Apple!”
The Empire of the Dead TV adaptation will be co-written by Romero and Peter Grunwald. Demarest — the company behind Kevin Smith’s Tusk and A Most Wanted Man — will be producing Empire of the Dead, but a network is not currently attached to the project.
