Viewers of A&E’s original series Bates Motel know that Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) took a significant step towards becoming the man that he was in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. But the end of Norman’s story is far from over.
A&E has given Bates Motel a two season renewal for 20 episodes (10 per season), which will keep the series going into its fifth season in 2017.
“The vision of our incredible creative team has exposed the steady breakdown of the relationship between Norman and Norma Bates,” said A&E General Manager Rob Sharenow in a statement. “We are thrilled to bring fans two more seasons to witness the next stages of Norman’s transformation into the most notorious psychopath in cinematic history.”
Bates Motel also stars Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates, with Max Thieriot as Dylan; Olivia Cooke as Emma, and Nestor Carbonell as Sheriff Alex Romero. The series is a contemporary reboot of Norman Bates from Psycho, but Norman’s character trajectory takes a lot of cues from that film.
The new episodes of Bates Motel will begin production later this year, with season 4 slated to premiere on A&E in 2016.
