This morning, fans of Xena: Warrior Princess were elated to hear that NBC was supposedly developing a reboot of the classic adventure series for 2016. But it turns out that it’s not really happening.
Xena herself, Lucy Lawless has taken to twitter with a denial of the story that originated at The Hollywood Reporter. Lawless wrote “Sorry, friends! news of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor. I’d love it to happen one day but it’s still in the wishful thinking stage.”
And Lawless should know. She’s married to Rob Tapert, one of Xena’s co-creators and supposedly the executive producer of NBC’s Xena alongside Sam Raimi.
We have to admit that we were fooled too, but when something shows up on The Hollywood Reporter, it usually isn’t just some conjecture. Lawless has been quite vocal about her desire to see Xena return in one form or another. At Comic-Con, Lawless told CraveOnline that she’d be up for either a reboot with a younger Xena or returning to the role herself alongside her former co-stars, Renee O’Connor and Ted Raimi.
The original Xena: Warrior Princess was a spinoff of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. But while the star of Hercules, Kevin Sorbo is trotted out on Fox News as a commentator about the nuclear pact with Iran, Lawless remains busy on TV with an upcoming stint on Ash vs Evil Dead. Lawless has also appeared in Battlestar Galactica, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Parks and Recreation, and the Spartacus TV series on STARZ.
