A new viral Kendrick Lamar meme called “Mustard” has been making a lot of waves on social media, in the wake of the recent release of GNX, the rapper’s sixth album. This has surprised and excited many fans, who wish to learn the origins of the meme.
Without further delay, here’s what we have learned about Kendrick Lamar’s “Mustard” meme.
Kendrick Lamar’s viral ‘mustard’ meme explained
Kendrick Lamar’s “Mustard” meme originates from the seventh track of his new album GNX, called “TV Off.” In this track, at the two-minute and five seconds mark, Lamar starts screaming “MUSTAAAARRRD.” The scream continues for five seconds more.
This is a name drop of Mustard, AKA Dijon Isaiah McFarlane, a record producer and DJ who co-produced GNX alongside Lamar, Kamasi Washington, Craig Balmoris, and Jack Antonoff. Consequently, fans took this scream and turned it into an internet meme shortly after. Some memes even used intense film clips or shots to evoke the sheer energy of the scream.

Not only fans, but even brands jumped on Kendrick Lamar’s Mustard meme bandwagon. For instance, McDonald’s shared a picture of a Honey Mustard packet on X (formerly Twitter), captioning it “Honey MUSTAARRRDD.”
Eventually, Mustard also reacted to the namedrop, addressing his reaction in an interview with Billboard. “That s*** was elite. So fire. Like, is that a new tag?” he said. “I can’t wait to perform that song and just hear people just saying that, ‘cause everybody’s going to say that like crazy.’” Mustard also mentioned his surprise at the album’s quick release, expressing he thought it would only come out on Thanksgiving.
