In this article, we will delve into the details of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s death.

What happened to UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson?

On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare Brian Thompson was fatally shot outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The shooting occurred at around 6:45 a.m. ET, just before the start of the company’s annual investor conference. Thompson was walking toward the Hilton Hotel when a gunman, who had been waiting, shot him in the back and calf. He was quickly taken to a hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

The suspect, who was wearing a mask, had a gray backpack with them at the time. He fled the scene on foot and rode off on an electric bike toward Central Park. Police believe the shooting was not a random act and are still investigating the motive. As per ABC News, shell casings marked with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” were found at the scene. However, the meaning behind them remains unclear.

Paulette, Thompson’s wife, confirmed that her husband had received threats in the past but could not provide more details. In an interview with CNN, she said, “We are shattered to hear about the senseless killing of our beloved Brian. Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, talented man who truly lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives. Most importantly, Brian was an incredibly loving father to our two sons and will be greatly missed.”

The tragic event occurred hours before New York’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony. However, the event went ahead with increased security. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to search for clues.
