A strange image of SpongeBob SquarePants’ Plankton has become a viral meme on TikTok. This has greatly intrigued fans who are now curious about this “cursed” meme and what it entails. Fans also wish to learn about the meme’s origins.
Here is everything you need to know.
‘Cursed Plankton’ meme on TikTok explained
The ‘Cursed Plankton’ meme on TikTok involves a heavily edited and illustrated image of Plankton, with his mouth open, eyes closed, and face wrinkled, mimicking a facial expression that resembles groaning. This image is accompanied by audio of a deep groan, along with captions describing annoying or undesirable things happening to users.
User @planktongemendo was reportedly the first to popularize the meme in recent months. He started posting the image of the heavily edited Plankton, accompanied by the heavy groan audio, very regularly. It was the October 2 upload that had gone viral. However, these images had no captions.
Soon after, other users also jumped in and shared the same meme online accompanied by different captions, describing annoying or undesirable experiences in their lives.
For instance, one user uploaded the Cursed Plankton meme describing their frustrated realization of a test the next day.
Another user shared the meme to describe the unpleasant experience of garbage juice dripping between their toes when they were taking out the trash.
The meme’s roots trace all the way back to 2010, when a heavily photoshopped image of Plankton was posted on the art-sharing website DeviantArt, by user Moopintot. He titled the post “Plenkton.” This image of Plankton then became associated with the creepypasta, “Plankton Got Served.” Plankton Got Served is an alleged “lost episode” of SpongeBob SquarePants that purportedly shows Plankton deciding to commit suicide.
Some users have also chosen to share the meme in other ways. For instance, one user baked a cake inspired by Plankton’s edited image seen in the meme. The origin of the heavy groan sound remains unclear, as its source video or sound is currently unknown.
