The Microsoft Surface Studio Aims to Kill Apple’s iMac

The Microsoft Surface Studio has been announced, with it being one of the best-looking PCs ever created.

The brand new all-in-one desktop, the first ever created by Microsoft, boasts the premium aesthetic of your typical Apple iMac and targets the same creative industries. Rocking a 28-inch “4.5K” Ultra HD touchscreen display, clocking in with 13.5 million pixels (that’s 63% larger than a 4K display) and hailed as the thinnest LCD monitor ever by Microsoft at just 12.5 mm, the Surface Studio can also be repositioned by way of its Zero Gravity Hinge, which allows it to be adjusted to a 20-degree angle. Microsoft is branding this “Studio Mode,” with it effectively turning into a digital canvas that users can even lean on, as they would their other work surfaces.

Beneath the hood the Surface Studio packs Intel Core i5 processor, 1TB of internal storage, 8GB of RAM and a 2GB GPU in its base model, with the high-end model featuring a Core i7 processor, a 2TB storage disk, 32GB of RAM. The latter option also features a 4GB Nvidia GTX 980M graphics processor, compared to the base model’s GTX 965M. While these are last-generation GPUs — Nvidia is currently selling a GTX 1080 and 1070 — they’re still powerful enough to utilize virtual reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. You can also spend an extra $500 to equip the base model with a Core i7 CPU and 16GB RAM

The Surface Studio also has a couple of impressive accessories, including the Surface Pen stylus and the Surface Dial, which functions as scroll wheel allowing you to swiftly flip through pages, adjust various sliders such as brightness and volume, along with undoing your work. While the Surface Pen will be included with the Surface Studio, the Surface Dial will be sold separately.

Pre-orders for the Microsoft Surface Studio are currently being taken in the UK, with the base model costing $2,999 and the high-end model a hefty $4,199. The first wave of models are set to ship on December 15, with more set to be sent to buyers in early 2017.
