Mandatory Hacks: Your Weekly TikTok Tip to Improve Your Mildly Pathetic Life

You probably already know this, but here at Mandatory we know a thing or two about drinking and life hacks. Like, for starters, mitigating how freakin’ expensive drinking can get. Now that Spooky month is finally here, we’re getting ready to celebrate. The best way we know how is by making a gallon of Hard Cider  at home for around $10 thanks to this tutorial by TikTok user @thehow2dude.

What you will need:

  • 1 Gallon of Apple Juice (choose one with no additives of any kind)
  • 1 Balloon
  • Rubbing Alcohol or Everclear (for sterilization purposes)
  • 1/3 of a Package of Ale Yeast

How it works is easy. You take the plastic container of apple juice. It’s been sterilized because everything inside it was pasteurized. To keep things this way you need to make sure your workspace, hands and yeast is clean. However, you will need to sterilize the balloon and the lid of the apple cider once you take the cap off. The easiest way to do this is douse it in rubbing alcohol, but you can get crazy like @thehow2dude dude and use Everclear. Whatever you have on hand will work, this includes vodka. Put the lid and the alcohol into a cup or bowl. Next, take the balloon, poke a small hole into it with a paper clip and then soak it in the alcohol with the apple juice lid.

Meanwhile, you’re going to pour out a little bit of the apple juice. You can save it, drink it or toss it. Your choice. Then place about a third of the package of yeast into the apple juice container and replace the lid. Then shake that the hell up. Then shake it up some more. Remove the lid and replace it with the balloon like a condom over the opening of the apple juice. Leave that in a dark place for two weeks and it will be hard cider time for Halloween. Cheers.
