Transformers director Michael Bay is making a big push into comics, starting in October.
Variety is reporting that Bay’s 451 Media Group plans to launch an interactive publishing division that will combine graphic novels and digital video. More specifically, the printed graphic novels will reportedly feature “Touchcode technology from T+ink” that would allow mobile and tablet users to unlock special videos on their touchscreen devices.
Marvel Comics has been using a similar feature for its AR app. But Marvel’s video clips have largely been focused on behind-the-scenes explanations and insights into their stories. 451 Media appears to have something more ambitious in mind.
“We discover great stories by way of our team of top-notch writers, screenwriters and authors and then work with our technology partners to turn those stories into truly immersive entertainment experiences,” explained Doug Nunes, the CEO of 451 Media.
The announced lineup of creators for 451’s graphic novels is light on established comic talent, but they do have Hollywood experience. Among the names listed were Scott Rosenberg (Con Air), Skip Woods (The Wolverine), George Pelecanos (The Wire), Mark Mallouk (Black Mass), Clay McLeod Chapman (The Avengers) and Peter and Paul Williams (vfx for Avatar, The Avengers).
Fans in attendance at New York Comic Con in October will have a chance to see an early glimpse of 451 Media’s graphic novel line. A preview will also be posted on Machinima’s YouTube channel.
