Glen Powell Reveals if He’ll Join Mission: Impossible 9 to Replace Tom Cruise

With Tom Cruise‘s stint with the Mission: Impossible franchise seemingly entering its twilight stage, actor Glen Powell has come out to address rumors suggesting that he would be replacing Cruise in the action-packed film series. The Twisters star is highly poised to take over the proceedings from Cruise after the upcoming release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. However, Powell feels that he is not cut out for a role as demanding as this.

Glen Powell says replacing Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible would be a ‘death trap’

In a recent discussion, Glen Powell highlighted the taxing nature of leading the Mission: Impossible movies. He then playfully stated that his mother would not allow him to succeed Cruise in the established franchise.

Powell expressed his concerns about potentially replacing Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 9 in a conversation with Pat McAfee. During his brief appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Powell subtly denied taking part in future Mission: Impossible installments.

“My mom would never let me do that,” he jokingly remarked before calling the part the “worst gig in town.” Powell also hinted at the dangerous nature of the Mission: Impossible job by labeling it as a “death trap.” (via Variety)

Notably, the high-octane film series has received much recognition due to Tom Cruise’s commitment to enact his own stunts. He famously ran along the Burj Khalifa in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol before upping the ante in its sequel. The Top Gun star performed an act that saw him cling off a moving plane in the fifth film of the series. Cruise was also seen driving off a cliff on a motorcycle in Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

At the time of writing, it is unknown if Cruise’s time with the franchise will end after its forthcoming eighth entry. Therefore, Glen Powell’s introduction in the Mission: Impossible series can be termed as purely speculative at the moment. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is currently scheduled for a May 23, 2025 release in the U.S.
