Actor Natasha Lyonne will make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut earlier than expected.
Marvel Studios recently revealed that Lyonne, who has been cast in the live-action MCU movie The Fantastic Four: First Steps in an undisclosed role, will have a voice role in the forthcoming third and final season of What If…?, which is set to premiere on Disney+ in late December.

Lyonne will be voicing Byrdie, an original superhero created for the show in a Season 3 episode. The character can be briefly spotted flying into action alongside Captain Carter and Kahhori in the official trailer for What If…? Season 3, which was released earlier this week.

Byrdie is not expected to be the role Lyonne will portray in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which has been in production since July. The movie’s director, Matt Shakman, previously shared with CinemaBlend that the upcoming movie takes place in “a new universe where there are no other heroes. It’s (just) The Fantastic Four.” This means that Byrdie, who is shown in the What If…? trailer sporting a pair of wings, is unlikely to appear in The Fantastic Four movie.
As for characters who are confirmed to appear, First Steps will feature the official MCU debut of Marvel’s First Family, portrayed by Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing). Their casting was first announced by Marvel Studios on Valentine’s Day.
The quartet will be joined by Julie Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer and Ralph Ineson as Galactus, while John Malkovich and Paul Walter Hauser join Lyonne as actors whose roles have not yet been revealed. The Fantastic Four’s robotic ally H.E.R.B.I.E. is also slated to appear.
A new episode of What If…? Season 3 will drop daily on Disney+ beginning December 22, 2024.
