The not-too-distant future really isn’t as far away as it used to be! Next month, Netflix will finally drop the long-awaited revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000, as Jonah Ray becomes the newest victim/host on the Satellite of Love.
Earlier today, Netflix debuted a new trailer for the MST3K revival, which provides an origin story for Ray’s character, Jonah Heston. It seems that Heston had the misfortune to answer a fake distress call from Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) and her sidekick, TV’s Son of TV’s Frank (Patton Oswalt). And that means there are a lot of cheesy movies ahead for Heston, the worst they can find! Fortunately, Heston will be joined by his new robot friends, Tom Servo (Baron Vaughn) and Crow (Hampton Yount).

As you can see from the footage, the new season hasn’t run away from the cheap and low tech special effects that defined the original series. If anything, they’re even more obvious than before! That said, the colors really pop in this incarnation, and it really is comforting to see that the spirit of the show has been so thoroughly recreated. Oswalt even looks a little like Frank Coniff, the man who portrayed TV’s Frank!
The full lineup of movies for this season of MST3K has yet to be revealed, but the trailer may hold some clues. At the very least, we’ve got 14 new episodes to look forward to when the series returns to Netflix on Friday, April 14.
