The Origin of the Term “French Kiss”

Although the so-called French kiss has been around for thousands of years, its name is a fairly new invention. Granted, people don’t normally think about the name or go to great lengths to analyze it (why think about it when you can simply do it?) That is why we’ve decided to do the legwork for you and find out exactly why it’s called like that. Of course, knowing about French kissing means absolutely nothing if you don’t know what it is and how to do it, so let’s take it step by step.

What Is French Kissing

So, what is French kissing? Basically, it’s a term used for kissing that involves heavy use of tongue and is much more passionate in nature. That is why French kissing is specifically reserved for lovers and can’t be done casually among (close) friends. As it is with many other things in life, not everyone is good at it and, for most people, it requires some practice. This is mainly because of the fact that you need to find out how much tongue you actually need to use. If you overdo it, the person you’re kissing will feel overwhelmed (but not in a good way), while not using enough tongue makes the kiss far too plain and uneventful.

How to French Kiss

Now that you know what it is, it’s time we go over some of the basics. A French kiss starts off basically like any other kiss, the only difference is you need to employ your tongue as well as your lips. But, how will you know what to do and when? The best answer is always to follow your partner and try to find something that suits both of you. The tongue should only stick out a little and, in a way, move along with the lower lip. There is no need for you to stick your entire tongue in the mouth of your partner (unlike what porn movies might have taught you), as the whole point is to interact with the other tongue in a rhythmical, caressing manner. Occasionally, you might bump your teeth against your partner’s, but it’s nothing to worry about and might result in a chuckle or two. The best advice anyone can give you on how to kiss a girl is to be attentive to her needs and, of course, relax.

Origin of the Name

Once we’ve gone through the basics, it’s time we dealt with the burning question – where does the name come from? You might think that it was the French who came up with this phrase, but that’s wrong. In fact, until fairly recently in history, the French didn’t even have a name for this type of kiss. According to some other sources, another name for this kiss is a Florentine kiss, so it’s safe to say that the French weren’t the ones who invented it. In fact, this form of tongue kissing has been mentioned in numerous historical books, including the most famous book of sex positions – Kama Sutra. So, why is it then that people call it a French kiss? While no one can tell for sure, certain theories suggested that the American and English soldiers were to blame for this. Namely, this is how they kissed their girlfriends when they came back from war as they’d apparently learned it from the French who were always considered passionate and innovate lovers. It was something new and strange for non-French people, which is why they had to name it.

Now that you know what a French kiss is, you should go ahead and share this knowledge with the less fortunate ones. Don’t forget to apply it, as well.
