Everyone knows a first date very rarely has the kinds of sparks that immediately lead to the kind of true love movies promise. If you seem to put no effort into how you look, it’s a signal to your date how much effort you’ll put into a relationship. Instead of ruining things before they begin, follow this checklist to look like the kind of guy who deserves a second date.

First Date Style Tips
Keep It Clean
No matter what, change your clothes before you go on any date, not just a first date. Sure, you can wear whatever you had on earlier in the day, but don't. Go home and change into something fresh and, at the very least, clean. This probably sounds like a waste of time, but honest to God, women spend tons of time and money prepping to go out. She can tell when you haven't tried and it's a turn off every damn time.

The Basics
On that note, you also need to deal with your personal grooming. That means: Shower. Brush your teeth. Clip your fingernails. Add product to your hair. Use cologne and a moisturizer. Under no circumstance should you just change your clothes and go. All these things tell a woman that you take good care of yourself and that's attractive. Whatever you do, don't show up to a first date like you just rolled out of bed. That's insulting.

Dress For The Occasion
Getting super dressed up is great if it works for your plans. More than likely, you won't need to wear a suit. You want to look put together without looking like you're trying too hard. Wearing a suit to go bowling is trying too hard. Most first dates are something easy like grabbing a drink or going to a show, so a clean casual ensemble nails this aesthetic.

Buy One New Item
If you feel like you need to buy something new, a t-shirt is one of the most affordable items you can purchase. Technically, you don't have to buy anything new, but when you're excited to go out with someone new you want to project it. A new t-shirt typically costs less than 20 dollars and women can always tell when something is new.

Bring A Jacket
First of all, the jacket isn't even for you. It's to offer her if she's cold. This is one of the slickest moves in the book. Secondly, with all the weird weather from climate change how can you know if you're going to need a jacket or not? Pairing nice denim jacket or even a robust floral print athleisure jacket with a monochromatic look will make you seem stylish without trying too hard.

Fresh Kicks
Sneaker culture exists for a reason. If you're not in the know, consider this the warning shot. Shoes make an outfit. Don't ever wear old or dirty shoes on a first date. You don't need to rush out and buy new shoes, but you should put in the effort to clean whatever shoes you plan on wearing. Also, never, ever wear flip flops. No one wants to see your ugly hobbit feet until after they're in love with you.

One Solid Accessory
Please don't overdo it. No stupid hats or rings on every finger like you're Mystery from The Pickup Artist . You don't want to look like a circus clown. You do want to look like you take care of yourself. A nice watch achieves this without going overboard. If you don't own a good timepiece, it's probably time to invest in one.
