‘Nightmare Alley’ Trailer Makes Us Think We Have No Idea What’s Going On, But Bradley Cooper Has a Mustache And Recreates a Meme So We’re In

Searchlight Pictures recently dropped the trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s (HellboyPan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of WaterCrimson Peak…obviously) adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s Nightmare Alley. The film follows Bradley Cooper as Stan Carlisle, a con man turned traveling carny who forms a very destructive partnership with a psychiatrist, Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett). The ensemble cast also includes Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, Richard Jenkins, David Strathairn, Tim Blake Nelson, and Mary Steenburgen. Check it out below:

Hmm…light on plot details, heavy on the striking visuals, just what the doctor ordered. Since we’ve never read Gresham’s novel, and have only surmised a brief synopsis thanks to our lord and savior, Google, it’s fair to say we have no idea what’s going on. Although, it does make three things clear: del Toro’s proclivity for the dark, twisted, and borderline unsavory has cemented him as the new Tim Burton—which would make Perlman the new Johnny Depp—this latest attempt at noir will delve deep into the underground carnival scene, and it looks Oscar-worthy. As does Cooper’s sweet mustache and his recreation of the “this is fine” meme.

We’re in.

Regardless of what your girlfriend says, mustaches are back in style—the “Pornstache” stigma no longer applies. It is, in fact, fine. So, shave the handlebars, cheeks, and march arm-in-arm stached brethren to a cinema near you on December 17th, supporting Cooper’s era-appropriate mouser and the intrepid who shade their upper lip alone.
