Influencers Claim You’ll Have More Energy If You Quit Caffeine, Here’s Why They’re Wrong (Spoiler: We Love Our Coffee and Hate Influencers)

Everyone is looking for ways to hack their bodies these days. If something promises to give us more energy, we’ll probably try it. But a slew of YouTube influencers have been spreading the gospel lately about the alleged benefits of giving up caffeine – and we’re not sure we can get on board with it.

Here’s one such piece of anti-java propaganda:

We won’t bore you with the science of why giving up your favorite coffeehouse drink might actually make you feel more energized. It basically boils down to caffeine temporarily perking you up, only to let you down later (in the same way a sugar high inevitably ends in a crash). Even a mild intake of coffee, energy drinks, or sodas sets you up for a corporeal roller-coaster ride of various chemicals in your body. Ever gotten the jitters or been unable to sleep after a trip to Starbucks? Caffeine is to blame.

By giving up the drug that literally makes your heart race, you exchange that post-cuppa-joe mania for a steadier, albeit less exciting (but supposedly still effective) stream of energy. Granted, if you’re eating junk food and skimping on sleep, quitting caffeine probably isn’t going be enough of a change for you to feel recharged.

In other words, if you’re desperate to feel more even-keeled and willing to give up one of the few legal drugs this country has to offer, go ahead and cut caffeine out. As for us, you’ll have to pry our coffee mugs out of our cold, dead hands.
