In a surprise to no one, The Batman recently received a PG-13 rating. Yet, somehow, the film’s rating has caused “heated debate” among fans who were expecting an R rating. Some “fans,” presumably the Synder Bros, have somehow convinced themselves that Batman can only be good if rated R.
While the Director’s Cut of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice may have informed this ridiculous opinion, it’s almost as if people have never watched an R-rated Batman movie. Because we haven’t. Just as a reminder, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Batman v. Superman have all received a PG-13 rating. So why would that change now? Big news, if true.
Snyder fans are lamenting the idea that The Batman might not be as “adult” as a PG-13 movie, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. According to the MPAA, the movie has received the rating for “strong violent and disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material”. In many ways, the film is arguably pushing the boundaries of what a PG-13 movie can be.
In reality, this movie is arguably more grounded than Nolan’s trilogy, especially in terms of the costumes. But if Batman: The Animated Series can pull off a dark and gritty vibe while also appealing to children, then there’s simply no reason to make Batman rated R. This idea that something will be better just because it’s rated R is simply ludicrous at best and absolute edgelord nonsense.
Not to mention that the same people complaining about this trivial matter have also watched three trailers worth of footage and haven’t complained until now. If anything, this “controversy” proves that no matter what you do, fans will always have unrealistic expectations most of the time and will never be happy.
