The Mission: Impossible movies are known for their dazzling action and death-defying stunts, but even Ethan Hunt isn’t a match for Coronavirus. In the latest round of movies being pushed back due to the raging Omicron variant, studios have been getting cold feet over scheduling. This includes Paramount, who have announced that both Mission: Impossible 7 & Mission: Impossible 8 have been delayed to 2023 and 2024, respectively. It seems that the Mission: Impossible franchise is living up to its title after all.
This delay comes after a number of setbacks in a production that have lasted years. Mission: Impossible 7 & 8 were originally set for release on July 23, 2021, and August 5, 2022. Filming was slated to begin in Italy starting in February 2020, but we all know how that went. Production eventually got underway months later, leading to Tom Cruise’s iconic rant that belittled crew members who weren’t following COVID restrictions.
Reported to be shot back-to-back, Mission: Impossible 7 finally finished filming in September of last year. During the time since the seventh film has shifted release dates multiple different times. First, it was November 19, 2022, then it moved to May 27, 2022, then September 30, 2022. Now, MI:7 is slated for July 14, 2023, while MI:8 is scheduled for June 28, 2024. At this point, only one thing is certain — we’re going to have a Tom Cruise-level freakout if these moves get delayed again.
Here’s what Paramount had to say about the shift – “After thoughtful consideration, Paramount Pictures and Skydance have decided to postpone the release dates for Mission: Impossible 7 & 8 in response to delays due to the ongoing pandemic… We look forward to providing moviegoers with an unparalleled theatrical experience.” No word yet on how Tom Cruise feels about all of this. Suffice to say, the release of these films seems… impossible at this point.
