Karl Urban Watching Dredd Sequel Petition with “Great Interest”

Dredd fans, you have gotten Karl Urban’s attention. 2000 AD put up an online petition to create a sequel to Dredd 3D, last year’s Judge Dredd movie starring Karl Urban. Today, Urban was promoting his new Fox series “Almost Human” with the Television Critics Association, and he told us he’s aware and enthusiastic about the petition.

“Wow, yeah, I’m watching that with great interest actually,” Urban said. “Of course I would love nothing more than to come back and make another one of those films. I had such a great time making it and really, I support it wholeheartedly. I guess it’s up to people. If they make enough noise, if they buy enough of the DVDs then sure, it’s a possibility.”

This isn’t exactly Kickstarter, so it’s a bit uncertain how directly a petition will impact a possible production on a sequel. Right now it’s just a lot of people showing their love for Dredd and hoping the studio takes notice.

“It is an interesting one and I don’t quite know the full mechanics of how it breaks down in terms of what the real financial reality is to make a sequel to Dredd, but I am really heartened by the fact that just about every day, every single day, people come up to me and tell me how much they love that movie and how much they want to see more. We’ll see.”

Should a Dredd sequel be greenlit, writer/producer Alex Garland is ready. “I think Alex has a lot of ideas but again, cart before the horse,” Urban said. “We’ll have to wait and see.”

We’ll be back with more Dredd news after we figure out how to get this helmet off.
