Episode Title: “Once We Were Gods”
Writer: Alan DiFiore
Director: Steven DePaul
Previously on “Grimm:”
We’ll have to wait a while longer for Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee) to join the Wesen inner circle. Instead of telling him the truth about fairy tales, Nick (David Giuntoli) and his friends decide it’s best to let the spooked sergeant sort it out for himself. And with a little help from Juliet (Bitsie Tulloch), he does. But how long until Wu encounters his next Wesen?
At the rate they’re showing up in Portland, it won’t be too long. While Wu is convalescing, Nick and Hank (Russell Hornsby) deal with a murder that has ties to Wesen history going back three-thousand years. The discovery of a mummy at a university has a local professor anxious to examine the ancient remains, but it’s also caught the attention of a Wesen secret society with a very political agenda.
It’s also fun when “Grimm” puts its Wesen twist on history and “Once We Were Gods” puts an interesting spin on the mummies of ancient Egypt. As Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) explain, before they were freaking out the residents of Portland on a regular basis, Wesen were once considered gods. The Wesen were believed to be so powerful that Egyptian Pharaohs would torture their slaves in hopes of exposing one and then killing it while it was in full woge. They would then be buried next to the mummified Wesen in hopes of absorbing some of its power.
That would explain why the secret society, and Wesen in general, take such offense at the display of mummies. Though the Council doesn’t condone the actions of the secret society, they don’t exactly try to stop them, as Alexander (Spencer Conway) explains to Nick when he shows up in town. While Nick has a case to solve, Alexander tells him the Council would like him to do what Grimms do best: kill Wesen.
Nick refuses to kill the Wesen responsible for breaking into the lab and killing the guards, but he does intend to stop him. But as it turns out, Alexander has other plans. While Nick and Hank are apprehending the killer, Alexander loads the mummified Anubis into his truck. Fortunately, Nick has Monroe and Rosalee keep an eye on the Council representative and assassin. Nick stops Alexander, but only momentarily. Realizing what it means to not only the Council but also his Wesen friends, Nick agrees to let them burn the mummy in a ceremony which Hank calls “touching.” Except for the part that involved stealing a three-thousand year-old mummy.
With the Council appeased and the case solved, Nick and Hank pick up Wu, who has taken Juliet’s advice and let go of his fear of the Aswang, which of course was never real. Right? Meanwhile, Adalind (Claire Coffee) and Meisner (Damien Puckler) are on the move in Austria after Renard (Sasha Roiz) warns them that Sebastian (Christian Lagadec) may have been compromised. Adalind’s baby is way less frightening outside the womb than in but she’s still capable of doing scary things like spontaneously starting fires.
Should they make it to Zurich, Renard has plans for Adalind, their daughter and Meisner to come to Portland. It would be nice to have all the major players in the same town again for a bit. Though it’s disappointing that Wu doesn’t get to be a bigger part of the Wesen investigations just yet, having more of the “beasts” as Hank off-handedly referred to them, around should have everyone watching their backs for things both imagined and real.
