Alright folks, we’re amidst a Summer game drought. Things are quite dry out there, just as we expected. Now’s a great time to catch up on your backlog, or buy some older games you missed. However, if you want something new, July 2014 has a few games to choose from, one of which is a monumental release.
We have a full list of everything coming out this month. If you have extra time because you’re on Summer vacation, or just need something to play while waiting for Fall to roll around, this is your guide to finding your video game match.
Check out the gallery below to get the low-down on all the games coming out during July 2014.
July 2014 Video Game Release Calendar
July 1st - Sniper Elite 3
It's been nine years since we last saw Sniper Elite , previously under the moniker Sniper Elite V2 . It's one of the only series that bases its entire experience around being a tactical sniper. For that reason, it's one of a kind for this Summer season.
In Sniper Elite 3 you play as an expertly trained sniper during World War 2. Instead of being set in Germany like its predecessor, you're deployed to North Africa, a place with treacherous terrain. It'll be up to you to change the course of history.
If you're into stealth action games, Sniper Elite 3 might be a good buy. It's one of the only big budget games of the month, after all.
Platform(s): PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360
July 2nd - Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
Okay, so this isn't a brand new release since Guacamelee already landed on PS3 and PS Vita last year, but it's an important one. Guacamelee was a great 2D platformer / beat 'em up with snappy controls. It's fun, lively, and could save your early July from being a bore-fest.
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition is designated for next-gen consoles (and Xbox 360...) bringing along with it the original experience and several new levels and bosses. Oh, and you won't ever have to worry about DLC because it's all included. Yeah, this is an easy recommendation.
Also, if you have an Xbox One with Xbox Live, you'll be receiving the game for free as part of the Games with Gold program this month. Congrats!
Platform(s): PS4, Wii U, Xbox One, Xbox 360
July 8th - One Piece: Unlimited World RED
What's a new month of games without a niche Japanese-flavored title?
One Piece: Unlimited World RED is an action adventure title with the same flavor as its anime series. It's wacky and flashy with a heavy emphasis on action. It's also got a lot of content, so if you're into manga and want a cell-shaded game to dive into this Summer, One Piece might not be a bad choice.
Platform(s): 3DS, PS3, PS Vita, Wii U
July 22nd - Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty!
The fact that this game exists is a miracle. It's a remake of the 1997 PlayStation hit, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee , a game that earned its fair share of acclaim. Developer Just Add Water has spent a lot of time recreating the original environments in a more modern, indie-style 2.5 world.
Oddworld is a platformer with a strange personality. You play as a particularly vulnerable alien attempting to escape from a factory. Beating the game involves puzzle solving and some unique interactions with the environment.
If you played the original, July 22nd might be a nice day of nostalgia for you.
Platform(s): PS4
July 23rd - Unrest
Here's your RPG for the month. Unrest was spawned by a Kickstarter campaign which provided a modest $36,000 for development. It's by no means a big game, but it has a ton of personality with 2D environments that appear hand-drawn, and NPCs that respond to friendship, respect, and fear. It has combat, but you'd probably be best off avoiding it unless you want to die.
Frankly, it sounds extremely unique, and certainly strays from the pack.
Platform(s): PC
July 29th - The Last of Us Remastered
It goes without saying that The Last of Us Remastered is the biggest game of July 2014. It's an upgraded version of what was arguably the best game of the last generation with 1080p and 60 FPS. It'll also include a new developer commentary option and several DLC packs.
The Last of Us was a visceral game that had profound impact on the gaming community at large. If you own a PS4, you know this is a safe buy. If you don't, a The Last of Us Remastered PS4 bundle will be available, so start saving.
