While developer Insomniac games said in 2012 that it won’t be making any more games in the popular first-person shooter series Resistance, it appears Sony may have other plans. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe just filed a trademark for “Resistance,” listed as a video game, with the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market.
Resistance hasn’t seen a game since 2012, and Sony shut down the servers for the Resistance games in April 2014, so it’s quite possible that Sony is just tying up loose ends, legally speaking. But it’s not unheard of for a series to be continued by a publisher without the help of the original developer. This happened when Techland broke off from Deep Silver, but the publisher kept the IP and hired Yager Development to continue the series.

The important thing Sony must consider is whether or not there is a market for another Resistance game, and while the answer may be “no,” since first-person shooter titles are not quite in demand like they used to be, have oversaturated the market, and there’s already Killzone. With a library highlighted by Driveclub and soon to be The Order: 1886, Sony needs to give its faithfuls more reason to upgrade to the next-gen system.
