During his Australian tour earlier this year, Ed Sheeran popped in to Summer Bay to film a few short scenes for his upcoming appearance on Australia’s beloved soapie, “Home And Away”, acting his way into the history books as the biggest music star to make a cameo on the series (at least since John Farnham in the ’80s, amirite?).
To drum up anticipation for the British singer-songwriter’s guest spot, the producers of Channel Seven’s flagship show have uploaded a promo clip so magnificently tacky that it will make you believe that the year is in fact 1992. Much like watching any episode of “Home And Away“, really. And you know what? That’s OK.
Sheeran portrays Teddy, a boy that the endearingly batty Marilyn Chambers used to nanny when she was living in the UK. He visits Summer Bay and then *spoiler alert* surprises everyone by actually turning out to be multi-platinum selling singer Ed Sheeran, and treating them to a special performance in (where else?) the diner.
As our pals at Music Feeds previously reported, being on Home And Away was apparently something that the ginger tunesmith really wanted to do, referring to it as an “Australian institution”.
“It’s always on in my local chip shop,” he explained. “I got asked to do it and it sounded like it could be fun… I have got a point where I really, really don’t care what people think so I’m doing stuff because I enjoy it now rather than because it might be cool. I am just in it for fun.”
Sheeran’s episode is scheduled to air on Aussie screens on Thursday, September 3rd. Check out the fabulously cringe-worthy official teaser video, below, and let the drama commence.
