At the end of the Cruel Intentions movie, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Kathryn Merteuil was exposed as a manipulative drug addict and her reputation was destroyed. It was a parting gift from her late step-brother, Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe). Now, Kathryn may finally get the last laugh.
According to Deadline, Gellar has officially signed on to star in NBC’s new Cruel Intentions TV series in the role she originated in 1999. The story is set 15 years after the film as Kathryn attempts to control Sebastian’s son, Bash Casey (Taylor John Smith) while maintaining her grip on Valmont International. According to the potential series’ description, Bash discovers his father’s journal before he is inducted into “a world of sex, money, power and corruption he could never have imagined.”
Gellar confirmed the news with a post on Instagram.
Before Cruel Intentions, Gellar’s best-known role was Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Since the end of Buffy, Gellar has only starred in two television series: The Crazy Ones and Ringer. She is also currently lending her vocal talents to Star Wars Rebels.
Roger Kumble, the original writer and director of Cruel Intentions, is writing the pilot script with Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross. Kumble is also slated to direct the pilot episode and executive produce the series.
Samantha Logan and Sophina Brown have already been signed to co-star in the Cruel Intentions pilot, and production is expected to begin soon.
