“Calamity Ganon” is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Villain

Though Nintendo showed off plenty of footage from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild during their Nintendo Treehouse E3 2016 presentation, they didn’t touch upon many story beats from the upcoming Wii U and NX game. As a result, many began to speculate who could be behind the attack on Hyrule this time around. However, in a short clip from the lengthy gameplay demo previewed at E3 2016, it’s made clear that a version of Ganon named the “Calamity Ganon” will serve as the antagonist.

Following the completion of a trial featured in the E3 preview, the player is confronted by its creator, an old guardian called Oman Au. Oman then informs the player of his role in the Zelda universe, saying: “I am a humble monk, blessed with the sight of Goddess Hylia and dedicated to those who seek to defeat Ganon. With your arrival, my duty is now fulfilled.” Oman then rewards the player with a spirit orb.

It turns out that the Ganon featured in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is known as the Calamity Ganon, who caused chaos in Hyrule 100 years prior to the events of the game, before being trapped in Hyrule Castle. In Breath of the Wild the Calamity Ganon plans to break free and destroy the world, as Link is tasked with trying to stop him.

The Calamity Ganon makes a brief appearance in the demo of the game that is playable on the E3 2016 show floor, though can’t be seen in full. It does appear briefly in Breath of the Wild‘s new trailer, which depicts it encircling Hyrule Castle.
