Tyler Hoechlin Has Been Cast As Superman in ‘Supergirl’ Season 2

This fall, Supergirl is flying from CBS and coming to The CW, where it will be the fourth DC superhero drama on the network. And The CW is kicking off the new era by casting Tyler Hoechlin as Superman!

As reported earlier this month, Superman/Clark Kent will guest star in the first two episodes of Supergirl season 2. Hoechlin’s casting was confirmed this morning in a statement from the network.

With the announcement, Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg released the following statement. “Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages. This worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

Hoechlin had his big break in Road to Perdition as the son of Tom Hanks’ character, but he’s easily best known for his four seasons on MTV’s Teen Wolf as Derek Hale. Fans of that show may not recognize him without his shirt off. Hoechlin also recently starred in the film Everybody Wants Some!, and he is also slated to star in Fifty Shades Darker and Stratton: First into Action.

In terms of casting, Hoechlin reminds us of Dean Cain’s Superman from Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Hoechlin will also be the first live-action Superman on TV since Tom Welling’s decade long stint as Clark Kent in Smallville. The CW did not release a picture of Hoechlin in costume, but you can bet that will change fairly soon. Superman has appeared on Supergirl’s TV series before, but only in fleeting glimpses. And while Hoechlin is only confirmed for two episodes, we wouldn’t be shocked if he recurs this season and possibly visits the other DC superhero shows as well.
