Last year, Game of Thrones stunned industry observers by taking home the top prize for Outstanding TV drama at the Emmy Awards. This year, Game of Thrones is coming back to the Emmy Awards after one of its strongest seasons to date with 23 nominations!
Via Deadline, the Television Academy has released all of this year’s Emmy nominations, with GoT once again up for best drama. In the acting categories, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, and Maisie Williams have all been nominated as best supporting actress in a drama, while Kit Harington will challenge two-time winner, Peter Dinklage in supporting actor category.
Critical favorites The Americans and Mr. Robot will also compete for best drama this year, opposite GoT, Homeland, House of Cards, Downton Abbey, and Better Call Saul. Mr. Robot star Rami Malek and The Americans‘ Matthew Rhys were also nominated for best actor in a drama opposite Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards). The award for best actress in a drama series will go to one of these women: Claire Danes (Homeland), Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder), Taraji P Henson (Empire),
Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Keri Russell (The Americans), and Robin Wright (House of Cards).

In comedy, perennial winner Veep will face Black-ish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Transparent, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. For those of you keeping score at home, that’s two HBO series, two Netflix series, one Amazon series, and two shows from ABC. The broadcast networks were completely shut out of the top drama category.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the early favorite to repeat as best actress in a comedy for Veep, but first she’ll have to get by Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Laurie Metcalf (Getting On), Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish), Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer), and Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie). For lead actor in a comedy series, this year’s contenders are Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Aziz Ansari (Master of None), Will Forte (Last Man on Earth), William H. Macy (Shameless), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent).
The 68th Annual Emmy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, September 18, on ABC. A list of the major categories is reproduced below.
