TNT Is Developing ‘Let The Right One In’ For TV

In 2010, American moviegoers got their first taste of Let The Right One In with an adaptation of both the Swedish film and novel, which was released with the title Let Me In. Now, TNT thinks audiences are ready for the full bite.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, TNT has acquired the rights to redevelop John Ajvide Lindqvist’s 2004 vampire novel, Let The Right One In for television, which will not be based on either one of the two previous film adaptations. Teen Wolf‘s Jeff Davis is writing the script for TNT, as he transitions away from the final season of MTV’s werewolf drama. 

Let The Right One In was previously in development at A&E for an original series, but the network let the rights lapse and return to Tomorrow Studios; which is partnering with TNT’s Studio T to produce the TV potential series with the producers of Let Me In, Simon Oakes and Alex Brunner.

As envisioned by Lindqvist’s original story, Let The Right One In focused on the friendship that formed between a bullied young boy named Oskar and a vampire girl named Eli. In the American version, they were renamed Owen and Abby, and they were portrayed by Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloë Grace Moretz, respectively.

If the TNT incarnation of the story stays closer to the original novel, then it may revisit the idea that Eli/Abby wasn’t really a girl in Lindqvist’s first version of the tale. Even the Swedish film seems to imply that history, but that subplot could prove divisive for an American audience, which could also give TNT the excuse to ignore it. Let’s be honest, that’s probably what’s going to happen. 

There’s currently no time table for Let The Right One In to begin filming, but it has a pilot order and it will be in contention to go to series at TNT.
