In 1997, The Sopranos kicked off TV’s new golden age with a crime drama unlike anything else that had been on television before it. Nearly twenty years later, Italy has its own groundbreaking crime drama, Gomorrah; and it may make The Sopranos look tame by comparison!
Gomorrah debuted on Sky Italia in 2014, but the series is making its U.S. premiere on SundanceTV. The first episode debuted last week, but Gomorrah will be back on SundanceTV on Wednesday, August 31 with two back-to-back episodes. The series is based upon Roberto Saviano’s novel and investigation into the real-life crime syndicate, the Camorra. In the fictionalized world of the show, the leader of the Savastano crime family, Don Pietro Savastano (Fortunato Cerlino) has been arrested, leaving the fate of his empire in the hands of his wife, Imma (Maria Pia Calzone), his son, Genny (Salvatore Esposito); and his right-hand man, Ciro Di Marzio (Marco D’Amore). But it’s going to be anything but a smooth transition!
In CraveOnline’s exclusive clip from the third episode, Don Pietro is visited by his family behind bars, as he laments his lost privileges and attempts to hand over his empire to his son. Imma has other ideas, and even her husband notices a new fierce streak in her demeanor.
Gomorrah airs Wednesday nights at 10pm on SundanceTV. There have been two seasons of Gomorrah released in Italy, and 24 episodes to date, with a third season on the way. So if you’re into Italian crime epics, this one can keep you busy for a while.
