Supernatural has been on the air since 2005, before The CW network even existed! While it’s long been speculated that the series might be renewed for a 13th and final season in 2017, the stars of the show apparently have a much bigger goal in mind before bringing the story of Sam and Dean Winchester to a close.
While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, series stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles shared their ultimate ambition to get Supernatural to 300 episodes. Considering that the show has only reached 241 episodes at the end of season 11, it would take until the middle of the series’ 15th season to hit 300…if the potential 13th and 14th seasons have 23 episodes each.
“When we get to 300 [episodes], I think Ackles and I will think it might be time to say goodbye,” said Padalecki. “There’s a chance that changes, but we certainly do not take it for granted that we’re going to make it to 300.”

Ackles added that “I feel like if I ever show up to set and I feel like I don’t care, or if I feel like [Padalecki] doesn’t care, then that’s the canary leaving the mine. To this day, I have not really sensed that from myself or him… They’re paying us to bring that little bit of magic to what they wrote, and I still feel that magic today. The day I don’t feel that magic will be a very sad day, and I hope that day never comes. I’d like to get to 300 before that day comes.”
Of course, the ratings and the network will dictate whether that milestone is ever reached. It’s certainly going to be hard finding new material after over a decade of sending Sam and Dean against everyone from Lucifer to God’s evil sister. But if a 15th season does become a reality, Supernatural executive producer Robert Singer hinted that it would probably be a reduced 13-episode order to bring the show to a proper conclusion.
“We talked about wanting to be able to know when our end was, and if it was to be, let’s say, 300 episodes, we could tell a 13-episode story,” said Singer. “I think it would be bad for this show to just ride off in the sunset without a finale. I think we’ve earned that.”
