Iconic Aussie flick Muriel’s Wedding is making a comeback, of the musical variety.
The rural-as-hell, 1994 classic is being adapted for the stage, and will be performed as a broadway-style musical by the Sydney Theatre Company in 2017.
This info came to light last night, when the STC held their 2017 season launch. The musical adaptation is reportedly being written by the original film’s director, PJ Hogan, and scored by our very own Kate Miller-Heidke.
But don’t freak out, there’ll obviously be loads of ABBA in there too.
STC artistic director Kip Williams explained to Fairfax Media: “The film is a classic not just because it’s this piece of fluffy entertainment… It has a darker edge to it. Obviously, Muriel’s relationship to her father, her mother taking her own life, this sort of abject, ignored siblings she has.”
“There’s an exploration of Australian family life inside the film, which is very pertinent, and there’s a broader exploration of Australian social life.”
And this news is not just relevant to us Ozzie’s down under. Muriel’s Wedding had international success at the time of its release, and the news of its stage adaption has spread across the Atlantic. Vulture reported on the news of the musical, but had to inform its readers that “sadly you will have to take a 23-hour flight to see it”.
So there you have it, Porpoise Spit is coming to Sydney. And it doesn’t look terrible, Muriel.
