A previously unreleased David Bowie album has been made available to stream via Spotify, with it being included as part of the late music icon’s box set Who Can I Be Now?
The box set focuses upon Bowie’s career between the years 1974 and ’76, which marked a particularly creative spree in his career commonly referred to as his “American” era. During this period Bowie released the likes of Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and Station to Station, though for collectors it’s disc 4 that will be of the most interest, with it containing Bowie’s unreleased album The Gouster.
Although The Gouster doesn’t contain any unheard material from the Bowie archives, the seven-track LP marks the first time the album has been made available to purchase in full, with it also being added to Spotify. Appearing as part of the twelve-CD, thirteen-piece vinyl set, The Gouster contains three unreleased mixes of ‘Right’, ‘Can You Hear Me’ and ‘Somebody Up There Likes Me’. The physical release also includes a hand-written note penned by Bowie detailing the original intended content for the album.
The Gouster was recorded in 1974 and produced by Bowie’s long-time collaborator Tony Visconti, with the late musician moving to New York to record Young Americans alongside John Lennon and Harry Maslin shortly after its recording. Visconti has handled the remastering of the original tapes from the session.
