We’re two films into Disney’s master plan to release one new Star Wars every year until the end of time immemorial, and with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the studio is intent on forging a new path ahead, full of anthology stories that take place in continuity with the official “chapters” but that are not officially a part of them. It’s a bold experiment that’s nothing new to Star Wars (the extended universe is vast, and let’s not forgot those Ewoks movies from the 1980s either), and it raises a serious question over whether the franchise will thrive when it’s not telling tales of the Skywalker family.
Fortunately, it turns out that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is pretty fun. Wait, ONLY pretty fun? Aren’t all Star Wars movies sacrosanct? Aren’t they all supposed to blow us away with ever fiber of their awesome beings? What happened to Rogue One that prevents it from being one of the best Star Wars movies?
