Last Friday, we got an anonymous tip that someone had started a Twitter page called Half An Onion (@HalfOnionInABag). Its one and only objective was simple, yet incredibly compelling: “Just here to get more followers than @realDonaldTrump.” Naturally, we tweeted the page out to our fans in an effort to help out the cause (but mostly because it was too hilarious to pass up). At the time, the page had about 100 loyal followers to its name.
‘Half An Onion’ Twitter Is Gaining On Donald Trump’s 22M Followers
Cut to less than a week later, and the story is very different. Not only are we looking at one of the most rapidly growing pages on Twitter at the moment — with a following of over 500K and counting — but it’s got star power to boot. What started out as a few helpful retweets from the likes of celebrities like Diedrich Bader has snowballed into something of a star-studded event. Take a look at just a select few tweets from other fellow celebs in support of the all powerful half-onion:

Pretty impressive, huh? And it doesn’t stop there. Many more famous folks have begun following the page, including Rob McElhenny, Mark Hamill, Kurt Sutter, Rob Huebel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Guillermo del Toro, Melissa Etheridge, Holly Madison, Paul Feig, Adam McKay, The Lonely Island, Will Arnett, Dan Harmon and so many more. It almost brings a tear to your eye (actually, I think that’s the onion). Fortunately, if you think jokes like that stink, the ones coming from the onion’s Twitter page are much better. Here are a few choice selections:
I won’t clog your feeds. I’m just here to get more followers than @realDonaldTrump & then hopefully be used on a hamburger or in an omelet.

Just curious @realDonaldTrump, is it difficult to peel an onion with such tiny hands?

Eric Trump always looks like he accidentally bit into a whole raw onion & is trying to act like he meant to and that it actually tastes good pic.twitter.com/SNFPL4RlSe

Just waiting for @realDonaldTrump to claim that the 300,000-400,000 who have followed me so far did it illegally.

For the record, I’m not gonna show you my tax returns either because, well…I’m a half-used piece of produce in a bag. Not the president.

We’re not saying 500K+ and counting isn’t still a far cry away from Trump’s 22M, but we believe in the onion, and so should you.
